How a kid’s disco can transform your party

Get ready for music, dancing and non-stop fun!

Kids can take centre stage at a lively disco party!

If your child loves to dance, sing and blast their favourite tunes, a disco could be the perfect entertainment for their birthday party. With an age-appropriate song list, speaker and disco lights, dance games and the ability to take requests for their favourite artists - it’s a recipe for a dance party they’ll never forget!

A disco party is also perfect for big kids and grown ups to get involved: a good mix of top 40 songs, kids favourites and nostalgic bangers (Bon Jovi anyone?!) the whole family will be up grooving in no time. Add a professional entertainer to your disco party and they will be able to keep up the energy and provide something for everyone.

A great disco starts with the playlist! You can create your own or use a music streaming service to find one that suits your party. Make sure the playlist is age-appropriate (Spotify has a feature where you can turn off explicit songs) and that you use a premium service or downloaded songs - no-one wants their dance party dampened by ads!

If you are hiring an entertainer they will be able to tailor playlists to the age range of the children (four year olds have very different music tastes to 10 year olds!) and they keep up with what’s hot for all those pre-teen parties. If your little one has a favourite artist, a disco entertainer can even create a playlist heavy on their catalogue, and match the activities - like a ‘Shake it off’ dance-off for all those Swifties out there. And the great thing about technology these days is that you can even create a Spotify playlist yourself and send the link to your entertainer to play at the party.

Next, you're going to need a way to play the sick tunes! A UE Boom is good in a pinch but a party disco speaker really sets the scene and pumps the bass. When hiring an entertainer or DJ for your disco party, make sure they not only bring the speaker(s), but you also want disco lighting to encourage the vibe of the party! Hana Fiesta for example will bring a speaker, disco light, fog machine and bubble machine for a comprehensive disco experience!

Also, a microphone! If you have a speaker, a microphone is a must at a disco party to make announcements or encourage the kids to sing along to their favourite tunes. An entertainer will use the microphone to run the activities so all the kids can hear over the music.

Finally, if you’re hiring an entertainer for your disco, you might want to include an add-on to really help get the kids in the party spirit - a glitter bar or face painting can add a festival vibe to the party. Ask your party host if this is something they provide.

Fun disco games

A facilitated dance party means that the host will lead a games and dances to keep kids engaged and up dancing and playing, rather than just setting a playlist to run. They might include well known dances like the Macarena, Hokey Pokey or Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes (depending on the age range of the children) and play well known dance games.

Games like musical statues, limbo, dance-offs and pass the parcel are ideal for discos as they are games set to music, well known, easy to play and can be adapted for all ages and abilities. Prizes can be given to winners, or instead of eliminating until one winner is left, prizes could be given for ‘most creative dancing’, ‘best pose in a musical statue’ and ‘enthusiasm’.

Prizes are not necessary for a disco party, but if you choose to supply them they could be stickers, temporary tattoos, sweets or paper crowns. Glow sticks are really easy to find and fit the theme but they are bad for the environment and can snap easily and leak chemical fluid which can be dangerous for smaller children who put them in their mouths, therefore it’s recommended to avoid glow sticks if possible.

Creating the ultimate dance party atmosphere

With a decent playlist and a willingness to dance, a disco can happen anywhere, however, a darkened room is the optimum place for this kind of party. The darkness means the disco lighting creates an epic atmosphere, and the dimness can encourage children to be more loose with their dancing - dancing in front of all your classmates in a stark bright room can be daunting!

If you have concerns about sensory issues in the dark or with noise level, create a safe space elsewhere which is lighter and quieter, perhaps in a kitchen or garden area (not a bedroom as the lure of another child’s room and toys will be too strong and is a sure-fire way to distract all children away from the disco - and get your house trashed!).

A dim room and disco lights inspires a dance party!

Another way to create a dance party atmosphere is to encourage guests to wear bright clothes they can dance in, you could even theme it as a ‘rainbow disco party’ or a ‘sparkle disco party’, and put up decorations to match.

And in my experience, the BEST way to create an ultimate dance party atmosphere is to get the whole family involved and have the grown ups on the dance floor too! Kids want to dance with their parents and grandparents, inter-generational bonds are built and dancing is a fantastic form of exercise for all ages!

So for a night of unforgettable dancing and joy, transform your party with a kid’s disco! A disco is great for any occasion, too: birthdays, christenings, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, cultural or community events. Get the whole family up and dancing their socks off, singing to favourite tunes and playing games to music and watch the memories being made.
